Oh oh!

Oh oh!

I start my opinion text with this  little humoristic picture I found on Internet, because I find this picture so funny. Why? Because Justin Trudeau’s ( Actual leader of Liberal Party of Canada) image is depicted as babyish with all the glitters and hearts (go see his opinion on pot). But I want to go beyond this caricatured point of view (not I because I don’t find him irresponsible, but I always try to stick to an intellectual rigor and it means to search and learn about other point of views) . The debate about legalization of marijuana can be divided in many subjects; health, ideology and politic.

Health: The real question is: does it damage the health of the consumer? The diversity of polarized studies don’t permit me to be sure about the health issues of pot. But to set the table and poking your curiosity, the CCSA (Canadian centre on substance abuse) indicate, in one of her report, that drug use can « negatively impact their health, academic achievements, safety and, in the case of impared driving, the life of others. » An article form CTVNEWS.CA says that pot smocking affects the healthy development of teens’ brain and can increase the risk to develop dependence to the drug. (similar to sugar or smocking tabacco). They say pot can interfere with the brain’s health developpement for teens and that it can lead to agressivity and impulsivity. I think, any addiction can bring those components in you life because it leads to money problems and stress. But, another study suggest  » that smoking marijuana may reduce the risk of tobacco-associated lung cancer, calculating that people who smoke both marijuana and tobacco have a lower risk of cancer than those who smoke only tobacco (though still a higher risk than non-smokers) » And they are many others contradictions in a lot of studies.

Ideaology and politic:  As a debate lover, this is my favorite perspective on the subject. In the liberal ideology, legalize marijuana is logical, because it is your liberty to determine if it is good or not for you and the polarized health studies help this argument. On the other side, the conservative ideology includes the prohibition of substances considered depraved and drugs are one of them.

But, if you decriminalize something, it means that you are endorsing it and I think  the message can blur  the population. When something is illegal, you know it is bad, but what if it’s legal? It is sure than legalization of marijuana can bring about prevention and supervision. For example, the Liberal Party of Canada said that the government can sell better quality- lower price marijuana and that the organized crime will weaken.

I hope this overview helped you to have an opinion on the subject, or at least, to be informed!
